Fashion Week Update: Cutler & China Glaze at Tadashi Shoji

The look at Tadashi Shoji’s Fall 2011 showing is all about angelic simplicity—a beauty goal that women of all ages work to achieve. But what does an angel wear for hair? “We wanted something clean and modern, something sleek and close to the head, but that is also movable,” notes hair lead Rodney Cutler. “Even though it’s straight, we want the hair to bounce on the runway.” To achieve straight strands that aren’t limp, Cutler says it boils down to consistent prep: Finer hair receives a misting of Cutler Specialist: Volumizing Hair Spray prior to blow-drying, while regular or thicker hair should have Redken Sheer Straight 06 or Redken Velvet Gelatine 07. Before flat-ironing, he backcombs lightly at the roots. “We have a very low side-part, so the backcombing is tricky, but necessary for that bounce,” he says. He finishes the style by planting three bobby pins to secure the side part, and says he’ll be misting hair with Cutler Shine Tattoo to bump up sheen on the runway.
